Statement by Counselor Ms. María Paula Mac Loughlin

Explanation of Vote: Drafts resolutions on nuclear disarmament
- Argentina will spare no effort in working constructively and seeking the broadest consensus in view of the ultimate objective of a world free of nuclear weapons, a priority of the country's foreign policy, based on the historical position in favor of general and complete disarmament, in accordance with the provisions of the NPT in Article VI.
- Argentina will continue to participate in any discussion, forum or negotiation where such a goal is sought, with a view to the abolition of nuclear weapons throughout the world, irreversibly, transparently and verifiably with the conviction that the NPT is the cornerstone of International legal regime for non-proliferation and nuclear disarmament.
- The international community should work together to generate fruitful dialogue and negotiation between the five NPT and non-NPT nuclear weapons. The next NPT review cycle will be the enabling environment to promote joint work and a unique opportunity to overcome the divisions that we have sadly witnessed at the present session of the First Committee. The participation and commitment of all will make it possible to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons.
- Argentina welcomes initiatives to advance specific aspects of the non-proliferation and nuclear disarmament agenda, such as verification of nuclear disarmament and the initiative to renew efforts to negotiate a treaty for the Prohibition of Production of Fissile Material (FMCT).
