On 29 July, the Argentine Republic and the Solomon Islands established diplomatic and consular relations, which will make it possible to promote political, trade and cultural exchange.
The Solomon Islands are an archipelago made up of approximately one thousand islands in the South Pacific, lying to the east of Papua New Guinea and covering a land area of 28,400 km2.
The majority of its 622,000 inhabitants are Melanesian. English is the country's official language, but many other languages and dialects are spoken as well. The economy is mainly based on agriculture, fishing and forestry, and the islands are rich in mineral resources, such as zinc, nickel, gold and lead.
The country is a member of various regional and international organizations, including the Pacific Islands Forum and the Pacific Community, the United Nations, the World Trade Organization, the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the G-77 and China.
With the establishment of diplomatic relations with the Solomon Islands, Argentina continues to further its policy of establishing closer ties with the countries of the Asia-Pacific region, one of the most dynamic and fast-growing regions in the world.
Argentina currently holds diplomatic relations with 190 countries.
