Información para la Prensa N°: 401/17

Within the framework of the 72nd United Nations General Assembly being held in New York, Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

During the meeting, participants discussed the status of the trade balance between the two countries and strategies to boost mutual exchanges, as the current level of trade with the UAE has not yet reached its true potential.

At the meeting, Faurie highlighted Argentina's interest in expanding and diversifying the current bilateral trade. The Argentine Foreign Minister stated that Argentina, as a global leader of the food market, can contribute even more to one of the main policies of the Arab region: food security.

The Foreign Ministers commended the joint work to strengthen cooperation between the Governments and private sectors of both countries, so as to promote the growth of foreign direct investment.

As regards energy, Argentina sees the UAE as a strategic partner and, in that context, Faurie expressed Argentina's interest in working jointly towards entering into a bilateral agreement on renewable energies.

Faurie and his counterpart also discussed possibilities of cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy for technological development and research, for instance, in nuclear medicine. To this end, INVAP will take part in cooperation projects, and meetings with the Emirati counterparts will be coordinated.

Finally, the Ministers analyzed joint initiatives in the field of health, taking into consideration the high-quality training of Argentine health and pharmaceutical professionals.
