Reflecting Argentina's commitment to disarmament, non-proliferation and peaceful uses of nuclear energy, on May 10 2019, the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) agreed to appoint Argentine Ambassador Rafael Mariano Grossi as Chair of the Review Conference to be held in New York in April 2020.

Ambassador Grossi is an expert in nuclear matters, and he is currently serving as Argentine Ambassador to Austria and to  International Organizations in Vienna.

The NPT is considered the cornerstone of the international disarmament and non-proliferation regime and of peaceful uses of nuclear energy. The Treaty is reviewed every five years in a Review Conference.

The appointment of Ambassador Grossi is an acknowledgement of Argentina's leadership in nuclear energy and international security matters, as well as a recognition of Ambassador Grossi's diplomatic experience, who will begin preparing this Conference pursuant to the decision made in New York.
