The Argentine Republic will host the biannual Plenary Meeting and the Meeting of the Implementation and Assessment Group of the Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism (GICNT). This was announced last Friday at the GICNT Plenary Meeting, which was held in Tokyo on 1-2 June.

The Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism is a voluntary international partnership of 88 nations and five international organizations that are committed to developing and strengthening global and international capacity to prevent, detect, and respond to nuclear terrorism, within national legal frameworks and in keeping with international commitments, specially the Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism, the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material, as amended in 2005, and United Nations Security Council Resolutions 1373 and 1540.

The GICNT Plenary Meeting is the highest-level meeting within the framework of the Initiative, as it provides a forum to address challenges to nuclear physical security and its links with terrorism. Holding the Plenary Meeting in Argentina also means chairing the event, and evidences Argentina's deep commitment to non-proliferation, nuclear physical security, the fight against nuclear and radiological terrorism and against terrorism in general.
