During her address as UN Secretary-General candidate at UN headquarters in New York, Argentine Foreign Minister Susana Malcorra assured: “Those of us present here today share the recognition that the United Nations are frequently the only stronghold of hope for many people facing trying circumstances around the world. All of us are united in a permanent search for solutions to their needs, so that we can live up to the promises enshrined in the Charter.”
Today, Malcorra argued for the need for the United Nations to be capable of adapting to the new global challenges and offer specific responses to each problem.
“I envision a United Nations centred on people, planet and shared prosperity; driven by issues; and focused on delivering impact,” Malcorra said at her Presentation.
The Argentine Foreign Minister underscored: “In today’s world, the only way to deliver impact is through listening carefully to people and working in unison with local, regional and international partners.”
She also stated that the UN needs to be capable of adapting to each problem and offering case-specific solutions. She urged States to work to achieve “zero tolerance” to terrorism and to focus on disarmament and non-proliferation.
Malcorra advocated the importance of promoting balance both in terms of gender and geography within the organization, and undertook to promote parity between men and women in high-ranking positions.
The Argentine Foreign Minister assured that States need to work “towards finding a solution to the refugee crisis with a focus on people,” and she concluded: “I am convinced that this organization can do more than it has done so far.”
