At UN headquarters in New York today, Foreign Minister Susana Malcorra signed the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, an event she described as a “historic moment to address one of the most pressing challenges faced by our planet” and “the first step in a long series of milestones that will make it possible to deal with the issue in a comprehensive and sustained manner.”

"We need to believe in order to protect. Protect in order to make progress. And we will make progress through agreement in the context of dialogue with present generations to lay the foundations for future generations,” said Malcorra to representatives of the countries gathered at the headquarters of the multilateral organization. She also urged “every one present to commit to future generations and make their biggest efforts to solve this global problem, thus showing that we can do it together.”

During her address at UN headquarters, Malcorra underscored that “consistent with the new path of global openness that has begun in Argentina, we wish to deepen international cooperation to improve the capacity of countries to adapt to the effects of climate change and reduce emissions.” She also stated that: “Aware of how important and necessary it is for the entry into force of the Paris Agreement not to be delayed, Argentina undertakes to make every effort to secure its swift ratification”.

Foreign Minister Malcorra considered Pope Francis’ “Laudato si” encyclical a "turning point in the social, economic and political debate on the environmental crisis and on development objectives," which is "an appeal to unity in building large-scale consensus."

"The notion of unity is essential to determine common lines of action," Malcorra remarked; in addition, she stated that "it is a priority to attend to the needs of the people and sectors that are the most vulnerable to climate change."

"Argentina’s new administration has decided to create a National Climate Change Board in order to develop a common view that will enable the planning and monitoring of emissions reduction for the purpose of meeting our intended contributions; the Board will design policies in this regard and assess the measures required to implement the climate actions that our country intends to carry out over the next few years," Minister Malcorra explained at UN headquarters.
