“There was a very important evolution at this summit: a point of agreement on the centrality of the individual, on Human Rights”, said Foreign Minister Susana Malcorra this afternoon at the closing of the United Nations General Assembly Special Session on the World Drug Problem (UNGASS 2016), which ended today at the headquarters of the highest multilateral organization, in the city of New York.
“We have also set a date to meet again in three years time, in order to stay up-to-date, since the previous meeting had taken place 20 years ago”, she added.
When asked about the state of the issue in Argentina, Malcorra stated: “I believe Argentina is not ready to decriminalize drugs at this point, but it may be in the future. There are many views on this issue around the world. Our society has a very complex level of drug dependence. The type of drug used differs greatly depending on social status. We must first find a way to tackle these types of problems at all social levels. We must pay close attention to affected individuals so that they may be reintegrated into society. Once that is solved, we may move on to discussing decriminalization.”
At UN headquarters tomorrow, Malcorra will sign the Paris Agreement on climate change together with other high-level representatives of a large number of countries. “The fact that this issue is being discussed is important. This did not occur a few years ago. We must seek implementation. Countries have assumed a series of commitments consistent with President Macri’s philosophy. Argentina has worked a lot, for example, with the no-till technique, which is the only one of its kind in the world. But we are still far behind as regards renewable energies. We have already assumed a commitment in this respect”, said the Foreign Minister.
Finally, Malcorra underscored the importance of “securing public-private financing” for the sustainable development of Argentina and asserted that: “It seems to me that what is happening in Argentina with this change of course in relation to our insertion into the world puts us in a very good position to become interesting and attractive as a country”.
