REGRESAR

Tenth anniversary of the International Criminal Court

UNASUR Special Declaration

The Meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Union of South-American Nations (UNASUR) adopted a Special Declaration to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the International Criminal Court.

The Court was formally established when its constitutive instrument, the Rome Statute on the International Criminal Court, entered into force on 1 July 2012.

The twelve Members of UNASUR are Parties to the Rome Statute. Argentina signed the Statute on 8 January 1999, and ratified it on 8 February 2001. Two Argentine nationals are serving at the main organs of the Court: Luis Moreno-Ocampo has been the Prosecutor of the ICC for the last nine years since 16 June 2003. Silvia Fernández de Gurmendi, Argentine diplomat and jurist, is one of the Judges of the Court, currently President of the Pre-Trial Chamber.

The Special Declaration recalls the commitment of the Members of UNASUR with the fight against impunity for the most serious crimes of international concern, and reiterates their firm support to the ICC.
