World Refugee Day: "The solution lies with each country"

Argentine Foreign Minister Susana Malcorra chaired an event in commemoration of World Refugee Day today at the Palacio San Martín, organized by the White Helmets Commission, and remarked: "This is a day to remember that there are now 65 million refugees and displaced people, and that figure is rising by the minute; the refugee issue is so dramatic that it is paralyzing."

Minister Malcorra added that while she was in Lebanon with Syrian refugees, her impression was that "in these great crises the world goes through, man-made crises that arise from humans' infinite selfishness, maybe if we listened to refugees or to those that have been displaced, we would find an answer to all of these issues. In this context, we have to push to resolve the basic problems of all people and go back to the roots, to basics, so that these people can go back to their homes."

"Until that happens, we in Argentina are trying to assume our responsibility. Because as conflicts rise, societies shut down: there is a trend towards multiple phobias across the world. In that context, the Government is willing to accept refugees, especially with the idea that the solution lies on the shoulder of each country," Malcorra stated.
