International Women's Day

Friday 8 de march de 2019

Information for the Press N°: 081/19

08 March, "International Women's Day".  The Foreign Ministry is deeply committed to gender equality policies and to the political, social and economic empowerment of women, who are a priority on the agenda of public policies as well as for Argentina's foreign policy.

Argentina recognizes the fundamental role of women as drivers of change to achieve sustainable development and build peaceful, prosperous and inclusive societies.

In the context of the objective of working towards gender equality and the empowerment of women, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship signed the Cooperation Agreement with UN Women in 2018, and installed the UN Women Office in Argentina, which will also benefit from cooperation programmes –with international funding– such as the "Spotlight" Initiative (in the provinces of Buenos Aires, Jujuy and Salta) for the elimination of violence against women or the "Win-Win: Gender Equality is good business" Programme, to empower private and public companies to include a gender perspective in their objectives.

Achieving substantive equality between men and women is a priority for the Argentine Government, as reflected by Law 27412/17 on "Gender Parity in Political Representation" and the launch of national Action Plans for "the Prevention, Assistance and Eradication of Violence against Women (2016)"; "Equal Opportunities and Rights (PIOD)"; and the "Fight against Human Trafficking and Exploitation of Individuals (2018-2020)".

On this very meaningful day, the Argentine Foreign Ministry commends women and their diversity, reaffirming that it will continue working to defend and promote women's rights in Argentina and the world.
